I have been a fan of McAfee products for some years. They are easy to use.
The primary product which I have used is McAfee Internet Security. When McAfee Online Backup was launched in October 2009 for only US$59-99 per annum with unlimited backup space it made sense to me to subscribe.
I am a backup freak and it is years since I lost any data.
I religiously back up Microsoft Outlook 2007 everyday using ABF Outlook Backup.
I continuosuly archive my e-mails (and their attachments) using Encryptomatic MessageExport which converts my e-mails to PDF and preserves the attachments in whatever format they are in.
My computer works automatically everyday at 02h00 making a backup to an external hard drive using SyncBackSE from 2BrightSparks.
Back to my Online Backup problem.
Up until 18 February I was running Internet Security and Online Backup when my computer had to go to the computer shop to sort out a defective motherboard and also to have a 1 Terrabyte hard drive installed. Windows XP was also reinstalled
I got the computer back on the evening of Thursday 4 March and proceeded to download all my programs again. This included my two McAfee products.
McAfee Online Backup gave problems soon into the exercise and gave the following message: Your Account is Over its Size Limit (AccountError3).
It said that I had only 1GB of storage space – and not McAfee’s promised unlimited space.
McAfee were swift to respond and I had one of their friendly folk, Mervyn, from Bangalore on the telephone and remotely for two hours but he did not solve the problem. He told me that I should upload my backups incrementally until it was all done. This didn’t work for me either.
Last last night I found the problem: unknown to me (and clearly unknown to McAfee), the very latest McAfee Internet Security includes 1GB of free McAfee Online Backup space and one hasthereafter to subscribe to the unlimited backup option if onw wants it. (Clever McAfee marketing.) So what McAfee Online Backup was detecting was the 1GB free allowance which was a feature of their Internet Security software. That is why I was getting the Quota Exceeded messages.
I subscribed to McAfee Online Backup last night through my McAfee Internet Security link and, hey presto!, my 181.3 GB of files started to backup. (I now have about three years of Online Backup credit with McAfee.)
The system created Subscription 2 for McAfee Online Backup.
(My Subscription 1 had already backed up 140 GB of the 180 GB at around 1.7 GB per day. I have e-mailed Mervyn, my friendly McAfee technician, – who is due to call me tomorrow by way of a follow up – to ask him to speak to McAfee Accounts and Technical departments to transfer my Subscription 1 credit to Subscription 2 … and hopefully they can also transfer the 140 GB of my Subscription 1 data too.)
I shall keep you psoted.
